Those plates are killer! We might need some for the apt. How are the images printed on the plates? They look very professional. And I really like the intermingling collage format of the animal/food imagery.

As for the flame retardant tea cozy, I think that I need some explanation for that one. Is it supposed to keep heat away or keep heat in? Is it for iced tea or hot British tea w/crumpets? An interesting object nonetheless.

I really like the idea of the squid napkins w/ the squid design wrapping around, but I am wondering if it would benefit from the same level of refinement that the plates have. Perhaps ES should invest in a computerized embroidery machine.

And the SugarBlocks….you know how I feel about those. Simply brilliant!! If only you could cast a tiny sugar Ralph Maccciho that could run around and Karate chop them all to pieces!

haven’t looked yet. I’m still shocked at you breaking the usage terms of my flash implementation. haha.

The plates are kiln fired decals (vintage decals off ebay, cut up and collaged, then put in the kiln so the glaze melts and adheres to the plates), so they are the only really finished objects. The tea cozy we thought would be interesting as domestic hazmat, I was thinking about maybe some aluminized fiberglass pot holders, rubber aprons, etc. thanks

yeah changing that logo in flash took a few good hours out of my life today

Yeah the plates are really nice. Nice work Spiceship!! I would like to talk some more about the process that the two of you implemented.

The domestic hazmat ideas sounded pretty cool. That sort of idea conjures up thoughts of the 1950’s, a time in which hazardous materials and domesticity were so prevalent. I don’t know if you would find that connection good or bad. ….just a thought.

I have always LOVED the animal dishes. I’m especially going to enjoy and set of our own! Have you looked into designing/making your own decals? Is it hard? I really like the vintageness of it all, but having the flexibility to throw in a drawing of Audrey as potato or and interstate intersection would be really nice.

I like the tea cozy, but I wish that the shape was more…um, what’s the word i’m looking for…figural? I think what I’m after is making it look either more like the tea pot or more like a bullet proof vest for a teapot. Or maybe that’s too much? I do like Matt’s reference to 1950’s hazardous domesticus. Perhaps its a new design genre.

I enjoy the captured motion quality of the squid napkins. Its like the giant squid of lore that you can’t quite take a picture of. And the embroidery is hot. My mom just got an embroidery machine and I think she really likes it. She hasn’t played too much with it, but I’ll let you know if she makes anything awesome. Next time I go home, I’ll have to play with it and let you know how it goes.

Sugar CMU = awesome. Have you made a pallet for them?

I dig the spiceship.

With the dishes, I like the more subtle ones, where upon first glance or from a distance they almost look like fancy dishes my grandma might have, but then you look a little closer and see that it’s not (like the flowers and manatee bowl). I also really like the seafood ones and the horse.

Is that a graphic flame pattern on the inside of the cozy? Maybe it’s shaped more like a shelter for the tea pot?

I like the colors and composition of the squid napkins. It’s hard to tell in the photos, but as far as actual use, are the stitches tight enough that food and crumbs don’t get under them or snagged on jewelry and finger nails?

the sugar blocks rock!

Thanks for the info.
we are gearing up to do some more dishes. its actually pretty standard to get decals made ( ie pics of babies on coffee mugs and whatnot). But, most of the sites are hard to figure out theres usually a minimum that can be in the hundreds. A commitment but we totally want to do some. also thinking about using luster to painterly alter decals with gold?

Tea cozy was hard. that fabric is soooo stiff. We would like to make a more fitted form with some snaps maybe? I would also like to experiment with weaving or crocheting fire proof material to see if it would be more pliable to fitting. the majority of traditional tea cozies are just quilted square pockets ( pretty unsightly) or a knitted cozy.

I really appreciate the poetics of cheryls comment on the squid napkins. Will be thinking of that for future imagery on linens.

I like the napkins most when they are seeming to be trying to snapshot the giant squids (and almost catching them) Like in images 2, 6, 8. more intriguing. Why just squids? Could they be other elusive creatures? (bigfoot?)

Imagining more of the completely wacky world that the animals in the dishes inhabit would be an interesting way to go with future dishware. And then imagine eating them. yum! rainbow heads!

It would be like the pastoral landscape on antique dishes.
