Turkey Challenge

turkey day

Jeff, Mrs. McDoogle, Wilson and I would like to invite you over for an Emergency Studio Thanksgiving potluck next Saturday, the week before Thanksgiving at 4pm. We are so thankful for all of our friends and we’d love to share good food and good times with all of you.

For a successful Thanksgiving meal, I believe we’ll need the following: turkey, stuffing, gravy, potatoes, greens/salad, pies/dessert, rolls (perhaps crescent), sauces (cranberry?), appetizers, and of course some wine/cocktails. I’ll provide the turkey, stuffing, gravy, and any unclaimed menu items and we should all bring some wine. As much as I want to have creative control over the meal, I’ll leave you to your own devises and be thankful for anything you bring.

Although I would keep in mind the dietary restrictions of others…I wouldn’t let that limit you. For example, I don’t like mashed potatoes…but I feel that it wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without them. If there is something made with stock, I would encourage the use of vegetable stock. You get the idea.

One thing to keep in mind…I’m going to be supplying the napkins so I can create my “stain napkins” I’ve been thinking about for a bit. After the meal, before washing, I’m going to embroider all of the stains and wipes on the napkins, thus cementing forever the meal on a piece of cloth. Packaged with the recipes used to make the meal, I think they’ll be a hit. So color, is encouraged.

Logistically, our apartment is fairly tight, but I think we can manage. I would suggest bringing everything fully cooked and perhaps warm, and then it can be reheated in the oven after we take the turkey out, before serving. Also, stovetop items will also be a plus (ex, blanched green beans). And, since we just got a 12 person serving set, we’ll get to use my great grandmother’s china!

So, let me know if you’ll be planning on coming and don’t forget to claim your menu items!

I’ll be there! I’ll have to think a little about my dish, maybe a sweet potato mash? And hopefully Amy (who is quite a dish if you ask me!) will be able to make it too.

How does pumpkin cheesecake with gingersnap crust and bourbon spiked whipped cream sound?

Paul said,

November 7, 2007 @ 11:03 pm

I bet it is very silent, but very tasty.

Cheryl said,

Pumpkin cheesecake sounds fabulous! I’m looking forward to some whipped cream!

Missy said,

Just to clear up the difference between next Saturday and this Saturday….This Thanksgiving feast will take place on November 17th, 2007 at 4 pm. This is NOT tomorrow. It is next Saturday.

Paul said,

November 10, 2007 @ 1:44 pm

Amy will be able to make it… and we’re working out the dishes to bring.

Jeff said,

November 12, 2007 @ 12:46 pm

We need some green! anyone? I’m feeling a bit starchy.

Audrey said,

November 12, 2007 @ 2:41 pm

im bringing a green veg (beans or asperagus) dish and cranberry salsa. john may bring a tofurky. maybe we can squeeze out another veg dish…. but there are lots of good recipies for sides on epicurious.

Paul said,

November 12, 2007 @ 3:08 pm

Amy and I were talking, and we’ve got to narrow down the list, but we’re thinking a vegetable dish (perhaps broccoli casserole), cider, twice baked potatoes, and some kind of roll / baked item.

Cheryl said,

November 12, 2007 @ 3:26 pm

ooo….Paul and Amy are totally kicking everyone else’s asses with their dish count. Awesome!

Paul said,

November 12, 2007 @ 4:11 pm

I guess we have to make them all now… :) I might even have to move the fridge over and use my oven!

Cheryl said,

November 12, 2007 @ 6:45 pm

Well…I guess now that i re-read that, you did say you were going to narrow down the list. So perhaps you’re not the superstars I thought you were….but, with a well-rounded meal in mind, I would suggest the twice baked potatoes and the cider at a minimum. I think I will make a carrot soup and if audrey’s making a vegetable and patrick mentioned making a vegetable, I think we’ll have the veggies covered. And it sounds like we are going to have PLENTY of food. I’ll be sure to set out the extra big plates. oh, and everyone should remember to bring some tupperware for leftovers. I’ve got some, but I’m not sure if I have enough for everyone. Also, I’ve got some serving dishes if anyone needs them. anyhoo….I’m really excited and I think it’ll be fabulous!

Patrick said,

November 13, 2007 @ 2:54 pm

paul…i was really looking forward to the sweet potato mash :-( do you think you can rethink your starch choice?

Paul said,

November 13, 2007 @ 3:02 pm

Amy and I are shooting for all of the dishes I mentioned earlier:
Broccoli Casserole (it’s cheesy!)
Twice Baked Potatoes (they’re baked 2 times!)
Rolls (they’re tasty!)
Cider (it’s alcoholic!)

Patrick said,

November 13, 2007 @ 3:54 pm

sounds great, paul! look forward to it.

Paul said,

November 13, 2007 @ 4:02 pm

oh no! I didn’t see that Patrick. I was thinking 2x Potatoes since Cheryl isn’t a mashed potato fan, and since Amy’s not a sweet potato fan….

Audrey said,

November 13, 2007 @ 5:01 pm

!potato pandemonium!

Patrick said,

November 13, 2007 @ 6:56 pm

it’s ok, paul. i thought i was being told how it’s gonna be. i’ve never been told off on a blog…it definitely causes an interesting string of emotions.

Patrick said,

November 13, 2007 @ 7:10 pm

also, i just wanted to let everyone know that i’m adding a salad component to my list of dishes.

Missy said,

November 13, 2007 @ 10:30 pm

Holy Moly! There is going to be some serious deflection in Cheryl’s table. Matt and I decided to bring along a fudge pie to prop it back up! Its going to be super duper, its a recipe straight from the Alexander Compound! So I guess we have a monopoly on the desserts. Should we have some veggies and dip or cheese or olives or something as hor d’ oeuvres?

Cheryl said,

November 13, 2007 @ 10:37 pm

I think we\’ll have plenty of food…….to review:

Jeff and I: Plum-glazed roast turkey with spinach, bacon, cashew stuffing and plum gravy (also stuffing without bacon)and a spicy carrot soup.

Paul and Amy: twice-baked potato, broccoli casserole, apple cider, and rolls/bread

Patrick and John: mango couscous and a salad

John and Audrey: tofurkey, cranberry salsa, and a green veggie

Matt and Missy: Pumpkin Cheesecake and Brownie\’s special fudge pie (and if you all wanted to bring some cheese/crackers/olives hor d\’ oeuvres that would be good, but not neccessary…we will have cranberry salsa)

So I think we\’re all set. Oh, and everyone will need to bring some beverages as well….If anyone thinks of anything, let us know….See you Saturday at 4pm!

Cheryl said,

November 13, 2007 @ 10:41 pm

oh, Paul, if the twice baked potatoes are strictly for my benefit…they have quite a similar texture to mashed potatoes…and, to me, aren’t exactly much more palatable……..i really appreciate the gesture though…and i’m really trying not to be difficult…so if you’re going to make the twice-baked, more power to ya and if you decide to mash, i’m sure they’ll be great to people that like mashed potatoes….

Paul said,

November 14, 2007 @ 11:34 am

Due to recent blog activity, Amy and I are torn as to which potato dish to go for. We don’t want to bring some spud that’s a dud, so, here are the choices:

rosemary roasted potatoes
garlic mashed potatoes
twice bakes
sweet potato mash

what do you say?

Patrick said,

November 14, 2007 @ 12:51 pm

if i had to rank these choices, it would look something like this:
1-sweet potato mash
2-garlic mashed potatoes
3-twice bakes
4-rosemary roasted potatoes

hope this helps!

Jeff said,

November 14, 2007 @ 2:46 pm

hum.. i would go garlic mashed.

also, please send suggestions for a thanksgiving play list. I will be crafting that whilst the turkey bakes. . .

matt said,

November 14, 2007 @ 6:14 pm

1- Garlic Mash
2- Twice Bakes
3- Rosemary Roasted
4- Sweet Potato Mash

Audrey said,

November 15, 2007 @ 3:56 am

sweet potato mash first!

Cheryl said,

November 15, 2007 @ 11:05 am

As someone who does not like mashed potatoes…I am always so jealous of the way they absorb gravy with their mashed goodness….so I would vote for either mashed varieties. Sweet potatoes because of the possibility of marshmallows (but you should make something that Amy won’t enjoy….that’s why I’m not making mashed potatoes!) or garlic mashed, which sound excellent. Really, I have tried very hard to like mashed potatoes. They look so good with their pillowy goodness….

Paul said,

Amy and I got to chat with John and Audrey for a little bit last night re: the potato pandemonium surrounding this weekend’s Pre-Thanksgiving. We’ll let it be a surprise, but I think we’re going to shoot for a little mashed medley. Maybe one of them will sway you, Cheryl!

Wow, this has to be an all time high for posts. Sorry I can’t make it down, have some good eats though!

Yeah, it sucks that you two aren’t going to be in town then, but Missy tells me that you plan on being in NYC on New Year’s Eve. I can’t wait!!!
