Do Something

KPOPK-NY has been kicking around the idea of actually doing something as KPOPK (maybe not that name) but all of us, together, to help establish ourselves as a group both in our own minds and to the the rest of the world. John had the idea of a show/publication featuring all of us working with a common theme either on seperate, small group, and/or whole group projects. The 2007 Fall gallery season in Chelsea would be a super place/time to hold such an event. So we’ve got a year. All that being said. . . What is the theme!?!? We thought of that too (because this project isn’t about picking a theme), here it is:

In Ornament (it is set in several ways to keep from imposing any extra meaning to the phrase) Audrey blurted it out one night and everyone thought it would be a nice, relevant, not too pretentious theme/title. So there it is. See the (proposed) next steps in the comments.

What do you think inornament means? How would you interpret it? How does it relate to your work? How doesn’t it? etc. etc. Discussion to formulate a well written proposal/statement for the show. ready, go!

I watched PRIMER last night. And the whole time I kept thinking of those guys, slaving away every night to build a time machine in their garage, as the engineering/invention version of KPOPK.

I don’t know how big the space is, but for something like $400 a month we could get the basement of my new apartment. It might be worth checking out if we want an area to build things or just have a place to work that isn’t one of our living areas. It’s no warehouse, but a designated “work” space might be handy.

Well, let’s see it! if it is the same size as the building it could be pretty rad. and cheap. do we get to go down one of those sidewalk hatches!?

I usually think that understanding the theme is important to the project. If we’re going to use the word “inornament” to define something, we have to investigate what the definition means and implies.

In- : a prefix representing English in. in, within, into, toward. Ex. income, inland, etc.

In- : a prefix of Latin origin, corresponding to English un-, having a negative or privative force, freely used as an English formative, esp. of adjectives and their derivates of nouns. Ex. inattention, indefensible, inexpensive, inorganic, invariable

Ornament : an accessory, article, or detail used to beautify the appearance of something to which it is added or of which it is a part

This all sounds like a good idea….

To establish ourselves as a group (although not under the KPOPK name), and to push toward a date with a common theme. Although I cannot speak for 100% of the KPOPK office, I can say that I am interested and I would like to be a part of it. I will speak with Mwat to see what she thinks.

Perhaps this would be a good time to have the Pat Head Summit in Knoxville. We could go to Morningside Park and do some brainstorming in Alex Haley’s lap. John and I did that a couple of times black in the day (oops typo). Anyways, I don’t really think that we need to have a summit just yet, I just wanted to get those two puns off of my chest.

I love this idea…the word inornamant can actually mean with or without ornament, if I am reading correctly into the definitions above.

Maybe one person should sort of spearhead this project…ie write an abstract for a show, find some promising spaces, and in general be the contact person for the group. After that is done, that person could ‘call a meeting’ and go over the info with us, those interested in participating could brainstorm some possible individual and collaborative projects.

Obviously the Detroit office is a bit out of the way for this position, but maybe someone in the NY office will volunteer? This is a good idea, lets actually DO IT!
