Emergency Studio?

We are in fact emergent with a sence of urgency.

This name came up this weekend through a very short colaboration between Jeff, John, + others. At an art exhibition called Emergency there was talk about having a fund raising art auction to aid ourselves. Hence the Emergency Studio fund.

on a side note: It goes well the the Fox News phenomena of the day

Audrey was key in the “collab”
It was at an art auction/show for “Emergency ‘Something’ Fund”
I think it seems like a good one word, catchy, memorable, name. Not too random and ambigous, but not too specific either.

i’m totally pro it.

That name is hotter’na 5 alarm fire!

I edited the WHOIS info on my site the other day, and put Emergency! Studio as the “organization” I belong to.

and as far a hierarchy goes…?

EMERGENCY!
studio

but set nicely and all that.

Yeah it’s a cool name.

Hmmm…I like it, I think. With a word like ‘emergency’ in all caps, I don’t really think we need an exclamation point. I like the hierarchy of the caps and the lowercase as Paul has illustrated, though.

Two graphic thoughts immediatly come to mind…

1. Black and yellow stripes, ie hazmat type emergency, nuclear fallout, etc.
2. A red lighted ‘EXIT’ sign.

Should we do anything with these? I don’t know. These are just my gut reaction sort of mental images…does anyone else have anything?

i dont think graphic executions should have anything to do with the consideration of a name, we are getting WAY ahead of ourselves. sorry paul and missy. Also, with time your reaction to the name will change, think Pentagram, do you instantly think of devil worship and goat slaying? And to get ahead of myself, i don’t think the best way to go is to immediately develop an “indentity”. just use the name however seems fit to the situation.

I think we can get more milage out of it by not reinforcing what is already there, “Emergency”, with cautionesque coding. Rather building on top of it with another simple level (ie color, font, context…) that might simulatiously point in another direction giving it more depth.

can ya’ll do that shit with letters and whatnot?

Paul said,

sorry guys. I already made the style guide for our identity. it’s done. no more discussion. I hope everyone likes biohazard symbols.

I agree and think our identity will develop with some time and consideration.

Missy said,

I agree as well, but I think listing our gut reactions to words that might be in our ‘title’ or ‘name’ or whatever is valid, because we are not established and won’t be for awhile, not the way Pentagram is.

Obviously as designers and artists we never just go with our gut reactions (ie I don’t really think we’d end up using yellow and black stripes or a lighted exit sign in our graphics)…we layer ideas and controversies and antitheses and subtle direction into whatever we are doing. I just think it is important to explore the language we use to identify ourselves…and since we are visual people a good way to do that is with images and color, as well as literal definitions. I’m sorry if everyone thinks that is ‘getting ahead of ourselves’ but I hate coming to this blog and feeling like I’m getting slapped with a ruler for exploring a tangent. I’m just throwing thoughts out there, that doesn’t mean we have to do any of them!

That being said(vented), I like the word ‘Emergency’ as a description of who we are at this point in our lives, both collectively and singularly, and would enjoy hearing how everyone else reacts to it, both to the word as a microcosm unto itself and in relation to us as a group.

it makes me run to the store to buy plastic sheeting, duct tape, and bottled water.

OMA, MVRVD, KPOPK - I dont know what that stands for
Wiess/Yoes, Sagmeister, Diller/Scofidio, any other agency with a name name - oooh, creative!
2×4, Pentagram, Hello!, Big Spaceship, Mother, Huge, Work AC, - Huh, why are you named that?

my point is every name has it’s ‘flaws’ and can be analyised to death. the best just ’stick’ and after the initial “hum?” nobody even stops to think about it. Emergency seems to have the potential to be one of those names. It has a chance to turn into a name, like Jeff.
Does that make sense?
sorry im such an asshole.

matt, patrick, mike?

Cheryl said,

I believe that Matt has already commented. \”Yeah it’s a cool name.\”

I think that thinking about graphic identities is a good reaction, but I also think that it will develop in time, into something that represents us as a group.

My gut reaction the word Emergency is a hernia. Its both emergent and an emergency.

Paul said,

so when will this blog be called emergency blog? (the name is fun already!)

Missy said,

Come on guys! I named all four of my kids in less time than it has taken to come up with a name for our group. Well, I guess that little Lew Alcinder Alexander doesn’t count. My baby’s momma named him (she was an avid Lakers fan). Anywho………I beleive that the name is not spectacular although I can see that it has potential (ie naming our future compound the “State of Emergency”) So all in all, my point is that if we were to have a vote then I would vote for the name “Emergency Studio”

I think http://www.emergencystudio.com is available…

Mike said,

I like it, it’s a nice description of the group’s individual members at the present and also the group’s feeling about the world. It seems that if nothing else the path to find a name reached emergency levels.. Immediate action was recquired, and i’ll echo everyone in saying that this seems apt.
